Cinderella and Prince Charming Event Suits National Health Foundation Program Grads

On April 16, 2016 A Place Called Home hosted their annual Cinderella and Prince Charming Project. The event is designed to provide South Los Angeles high schoolers formal attire and accessories for prom season and potential job interviews, as well as to support development of social skills and self esteem. The day-long event drew students from NHF’s health promotion programs and partner high schools throughout the region. Juniors and Seniors from Santee Education Complex, Jefferson High School and West Adams Preparatory High School, who currently participate in our Be A Star, BUILD Health Challenge and Health Academy programs, spent the morning in workshops that covered topics like standing up to bullying, making positive decisions, becoming a positive citizen, engaging in entrepreneurship, and developing interview skills. The afternoon portion of the event focused on helping young men and women select their formal attire. For many of the young men, it was their first experience trying on suits and picturing themselves in a different way. For NHF staff members Raymond Diaz and John Rivera, it was an opportunity to encourage students to utilize the skills developed during their participation in one of NHF’s health programs. "This event gave us a ‘real world’ opportunity to support our students as they learned how to present themselves in the best light. It was exciting to see them realize the importance of projecting a strong, professional image," shared Raymond. For John, it was another mentorship moment, "In all of our programs we weave in aspects of goal setting, youth empowerment and positive self-image, and this event gave us an opportunity to reinforce those messages."

In addition to proms and graduation celebrations, several of NHF’s high-school-based health promotion programs are culminating in the coming weeks.  

 

With a great suit and haircut, this grad is ready for prom and potential interviews.
